#Mural At Bunyapa Park

I painted these stairs at Bunyapa Park! It was essentially a recreation of my West End Icons Tea Towel and I wanted it to also serve as a treasure hunt (who can name all the icons?).

I did a call out for icons that people in the community love or think are important, particularly if I missed them in my original tea towel? Some things I added were the steps of Cranbrook Place (a memorial for the Aboriginal Girls Home that operated along the river from 1900 to 1906), the compass at the Sailing Club, and the Kurilpa Common garden.

It took a really long time but was extremely fun and wholesome to spend so much time in this park and be visited by friends and strangers.

I was part of this because of Jonathan Sri, Open House West End and Blacklash Creative.

It feels so very special to have art in Bunyapa Park alongside the incredible work of @mabolous, @warrabaweatherall & @chaboodesigns.

I ended up leaving the titles for the books, I thought it could make for some fun graffiti?
The book recommendations people sent through to me were great though so I wanted to share...

The houses at West End State School are named after native animals in Turrbal language.
Chullawong - Mountain Magpie
Baruga - Kangaroo Rat
Dungar - Pelican
Kurilpa - Water Rat (or place of water rat)
The school website doesn’t have a lot of information or history of when and by who they were named but it is definitely better than a bunch of white men’s names :)

Let it be known that Chullawong is the best house even though here it might look like a human in a bird suit 🐦 (see below).
